“Chance Bennett, a Peculiar Name?”

Normally, I stick to underground artists with very little fame, but this week, I focus on an artist who is not yet mainstream, but is largely known. From his mixtape 10 Day, to Acid Rain, to even his new work with The Social Experiment, he never fails to deliver. You might know him as Chance the Rapper or Chano. And he looks a little something like(below)

His music is different than other rappers; he may rap about drugs(I mean, the mixtape heavily mentions drugs), but Chano is able to take an ordinary subject, or part of your life, and focus on the inner beauty. For example, Chance's new song "Sunday Candy" is a song about how you visit your grandma and what it really means. While she gives you Sunday candy, she is, in the end, your Sunday candy. His lyrics mean much more than what is presented. He spits the truth, yes, but he inspires and can tell one heck of a story.

As far as success as goes, Acid Rap was considered successful. The mixtape(which means you can download it free here) is considered double platinum on DatPiff, which means it has been downloaded 500,000 times or more. The Rolling Stones magazine listed Acid Rap as the top 26 album of 2013. He has been featured by several large artists, like Childish Gambino. Most of his music, new or old, has reached millions of views on SoundCloud.

My favorite songs by Chano are "No Better Blues," "Sunday Candy,""Smoke Again," "Chain Smoker," "I Am Very Very Lonely," and "Favorite Song."

If you haven't heard of Chance, give him a listen. I'd recommend it for any rap fan that likes chill music. If you're looking for Tech N9ne like, or more wild and vicious, Chano isn't your kind of guy, but if you like to chill, relax, and just jam to one of the best modern rappers, Chance is your man.

Good Music Can Make You Dizzy, Wright?

Dizzy Wright, a rapper apart of Hopsin's record label Funk Volume, has made a huge step into the hip-hop scene. Dizzy is fresh out of L.A., but he's been rapping for quite a while. Dizzy is the common rapper; he has dreams of becoming rich, he's a total stoner. and he just wants a better life for his family. I first came across Dizzy through Hopsin's music(no I didn't jump on the bandwagon, I started bumpin' Hop in 2009.)

Dizzy has one album, SmokeOut Conversations, and two EPs: State of Mind, and The First AgreementSmokeOut Conversations reached spot 42 on the BillBoard 200 US R&B section. I'm not quite sure why this album was considered R&B; Dizzy isn't a talented singer, but his rap skills are superior. His EPs have reached top 5 and 25th on the BillBoard US Rap section.

Dizzy Wright has a pretty popular song released with Logic, Young Jedi. His singles have also reached commercial success, and these songs include: Solo Dolo, Everywhere I go, Can't Trust 'Em, Fly High, and Fly High. These are my favorite songs by him, and he also impresses with any appearances with Hopsin. Dizzy's lyrics are too explicit for a school-monitored blog, but his lyrics are similar to the legend Tupac. He preaches about the world, and areas the world has weakened. He has visions of peace, and he often says he is here to finish Tupac's goals, or as he says: "Pac may not have changed the world, but I'm that state of mind he sparked."( http://rap.genius.com/Dizzy-wright-everywhere-i-go-lyrics#note-3044890) Wright overall is just a rapper ahead of time, influenced greatly by a icon.

Oh, and he kind of looks like Wiz Khalifa:

"I'm so tired of the rain."

You know, I’ve been a music critic and lover for a long time, sometimes out of intelligence and sometimes out of ignorance. But, rarely, an artist is capable of sending shivers down my spine. Jake Mcelfresh, the only member of Front Porch Step is able to do just that. Front Porch Step doesn’t mesmerize you with his singing, and tons of people play guitar with his skill level, but no one writes like him. He hits the audience right in the heart with every track. Listeners can relate to his words; he puts emotions into lyrics in a way no one can match.

               (Jake Mcelfresh singing.)

His music often centers around love and relationships, but he also touches about his grandmother’s death. Most of his music is truly depressing, but soothing. Just listening to a few songs, you are able to tell that this man is (or was) troubled. And the best musicians put their troubles into song.  The way he expresses his experiences is almost story like, which is why he is considered folk. He has recently released an album, titled Aware. A majority of the tracks are capable of making you break down in an emotional wreck, but a few of the songs are happy, such as “If I Tremble” and “Lullaby.” The entire album, which are his only songs released, all follow the same pattern; they are all acoustic songs.

(The cover of Aware.)

His music is on iTunes, Amazon, Best Buy, and Pure Noise Records website.  He isn’t all that popular, racking maybe two or three million views total (on 11 songs.) But, he should be much more popular than he is. If you ever have a day where you just want to breakdown, or are having love issues, play his music. My favorite songs are “I Won’t Say That I’m Okay” and "If I Tremble."

The lyrics I say are just clever one-liners, or just what is the best to me.

“I hate your cigarettes, and the men that you go see, because one is killing you, while the other is killing me.” (From his song titled “Aware.”)

“And I can’t hear you calling out my name, but I still feel your breath across my neck, driving me insane. And you don’t love me, so how do you explain? You walk away from my life, when you live inside my brain.”(From his song, “Poison.”)

And the deepest one here (I had a similar situation not too long ago, so this especially speaks to me. This is probably one of, if not his deepest, songs.)

“You always taught me to be good, and always do my best to be selfless. But, I know that God is holding you, and I am so damn jealous. Cause, I miss your arms around me, and the way you make me laugh, and now I’m stuck inside this prison that says you’re never coming back. So, I’m sitting in my room, as I try to write this song. I’m so sorry it’s not good enough, but it’s just that everything seems wrong. And I keep bursting into tears because the pain won’t go away, because the Father took my best friend and said she cannot come out to play. Anymore.” (From “I Won’t Say That I’m Ok.”)

"I do what floats my boat."

Carter Shultz and David von Mering, both from Massachusetts, are two roommates in college; they party together, live together, work together, and most importantly, make music together. Carter and David make up the duo, Fresh Aer Movement, or AER (pronounced air).

(Left is Carter, right is David)
Labeling their music to one specific genre is difficult, but they have been influenced by acoustic-pop, rap, and reggae. Carter handles most of the verses and raps, while David plays the guitar, sings the choruses, and produces the tracks. The group has not reached a high level of fame, but several of their songs and videos (on YouTube and Soundcloud) have reached a few million views.  Aer just recently released a self-titled album.

(The cover of their most recent album)
What separates this band from others is their style of music. Specifically, no other group can recreate this clash of genres. They can touch listeners on a deep level, or create club bangers. Their songs are influenced by partying and recreational drug use, love, personal experiences, and just relaxed songs you can jam to on a car ride. Aer is honestly one of the only groups that can soothe the soul. Their music just puts you in a better mood, or a better place. Their songs are completely relatable, like “Ex”.  My personal favorites, at the time, are “Pretty Lady (Around Me),” “Like the Way,” and “Sincerely.” I get to see them in concert at the beach in October!

 (Their signature logo)
For this band in particular, no specific lyrics stand out to me; each song is good.  If this band sounds like something you could dig, check out their Soundcloud or YouTube. Just search Aer and be a part of the movement!

Nice to meet you.

Hello! My name is Dakota, and if you happened to read my old blogs, they were about upcoming albums and such. This series of blogs will be a little different; I want to focus on artists, who aren’t very big. No specific genres will be mentioned; only artists who put their souls into each song. Also, I want to promote some of my favorite, smaller artists. We all know Eminem, Mayday Parade, Metallica, but I want to expand your ears. Trust me, you won’t regret listening to the artists I mention. Only my favorites make it and, in both negative and positive ways, I am very critical of music.
This blog will be approached in different ways. Opinions will be said, but not as often. Facts about a band or musician will be used, or assumptions from their lyrics. No negative reviews will be included. I will also include slips of lyrics from the artists’ songs. Some of their best or deepest lyrics that I have found will be included. Best songs will definitely be added in. Also, I want to include a paragraph mentioning how you can find this artists music, and a few links.

Anyone who gives these artists a chance will not be disappointed. Each week will be a successful one. Whether you are into a specific genre of music, the talent of these artists will be undeniable. A lot of this music is calm, relaxing music. I am excited for my readers to get some new music to add to their phones, iPods, computers, heck, I don't care if you use a Walkman. Each post will be finished and up by Thursday or Friday, so make sure you tune in.
